What is QBO? The short answer, and what it costs in 2026

QBO just means QuickBooks Online. It is not a separate product or a cheaper edition. What the abbreviation covers, how it differs from QuickBooks Desktop, and what each plan costs now.

Straight answer

QBO is shorthand for QuickBooks Online, Intuit cloud accounting software. It is not a separate product. Plans run from about $38 a month for Simple Start to $340 for Advanced after the August 2026 increase.

The answer#

QBO means QuickBooks Online. That is the whole thing.

It is not a cheaper edition, not a lite version, and not a different product. It is an abbreviation accountants and bookkeepers use because they type it forty times a day.

If somebody says "we run everything in QBO," they mean the version of QuickBooks you open in a browser.

Why the abbreviation exists at all#

Because there are two QuickBooks, and people needed a fast way to say which one:

QBOQuickBooks Desktop
Where it runsBrowserInstalled on a PC
AccessAnywhere, any deviceThat machine
Accountant accessInvite themSend them a file
BillingMonthly subscriptionSubscription, but installed
Intuit's focusWhere new features goMaintained, not advanced

Browser vs installed

The only real difference

Everything else follows from that one architectural choice.

What it costs#

Following the increase that applied to renewals from 1 August 2026:

PlanRoughly
Simple Start$38/mo
Essentials$85/mo
Plus$140/mo
Advanced$340/mo

Simple Start was the only tier left out of that increase. Plus rose about 41 percent and Advanced about 70 percent.

Which one you probably have#

If you signed up in the last few years and log in through a browser, you have QBO. Almost every new QuickBooks customer does.

Desktop still exists and still has genuine strengths in inventory depth and job costing, but Intuit has spent years moving people to the cloud version, and that is where the integrations and new features live.

If the price is why you are reading this#

The August 2026 increase pushed a lot of people to look at what else is out there. Two honest options:

Wave is free for unlimited invoicing and bookkeeping, with no inventory and no multi-currency. Fine for a service business, useless for a product one. We compare them directly in Wave vs QuickBooks.

Xero is the closer like-for-like swap, and includes unlimited users on every plan, which is where it undercuts QuickBooks for a team. Its own prices rise on 1 October 2026, so factor that in.

If you have decided to leave, the steps and the one-year read-only window are in how to cancel QuickBooks.

The short version

What works

  • Knowing QBO and QuickBooks Online are the same thing removes most of the confusion in accountant and forum conversations
  • The cloud version is the one Intuit actively develops, so QBO is what almost every current guide and integration means
  • Being browser based means no install, and your accountant can be given access without sending a file

What does not

  • The abbreviation gets used loosely, and some people say QBO when they mean any QuickBooks product
  • QBO and QuickBooks Desktop are genuinely different products with different feature sets, so advice for one can be wrong for the other
  • Prices rose sharply in August 2026 on every tier except Simple Start

Frequently asked questions

What does QBO stand for?
QuickBooks Online. It is an abbreviation used by accountants, bookkeepers, and Intuit support, not a separate product name. If somebody says they work in QBO, they mean the browser-based version of QuickBooks.
Is QBO the same as QuickBooks?
QBO is one version of QuickBooks. The other is QuickBooks Desktop, which is installed software rather than browser based. They share a name and a company but are different products with different features, so a tutorial written for one may not apply to the other.
How much does QBO cost?
Simple Start is around $38 a month, Essentials $85, Plus $140, and Advanced $340, following the price increase that applied to renewals from 1 August 2026. Simple Start was the only tier left out of that increase.
Is QBO better than QuickBooks Desktop?
It is the one Intuit is investing in, which matters more than a feature comparison. Desktop keeps some inventory and job-costing depth that Online has never fully matched, but Online gets the new features, the integrations, and the accountant access that most small businesses actually use.
