Verdict

Best for talking-head video

Descript lets you edit video by editing its transcript, which suits interviews and talking-head content. Free covers 60 minutes a month with a watermark. Creator at around $24 removes both limits.

Pros and cons

What works

  • Editing video by deleting words from a transcript is genuinely faster than timeline editing for interview and talking-head content
  • The free plan is usable for evaluation: 60 minutes of media a month and 100 AI credits, in 25 languages
  • Filler-word removal and studio-sound cleanup handle the tedious parts of podcast and video editing automatically
  • Creator tier includes 4K watermark-free export, which many competitors reserve for higher plans

What does not

  • Two separate meters, media hours and AI credits, make it hard to predict which limit you will hit first
  • The free plan exports at 720p with a watermark, so it cannot produce publishable work
  • Descript's own pricing display is confusing on monthly versus annual figures; confirm which you are being charged
  • It is built around spoken-word video, so it is the wrong tool for motion graphics or heavily designed edits

The core idea#

Descript transcribes your video, then lets you edit the video by editing the transcript. Delete a sentence from the text and that moment disappears from the footage.

For anyone who has scrubbed a timeline hunting for the exact frame where someone stopped saying "um," this is a genuine change in how the work feels.

60 minutes

Free plan media allowance per month

Enough to test the workflow properly. Exports are 720p with a watermark, so free is for evaluation, not publishing.

Two meters, which is the confusing part#

Descript limits usage two separate ways, and they run down independently:

  • Media hours — how much footage you can bring in and work on
  • AI credits — consumed by voice cloning, studio sound, AI generation
PlanMedia/monthAI creditsExport
Free60 min100 one-time720p, watermarked
Hobbyist600 min400/mo1080p, clean
Creator1,800 min800/mo4K, clean
Business2,400 min1,500/mo4K, clean

Why Creator is usually the right tier#

Hobbyist's 600 minutes sounds generous until you account for raw footage. A one-hour recording session that yields a ten-minute video still consumes an hour of media allowance. Creator's 1,800 minutes covers roughly three hours of raw recording a week, which matches most small-business content schedules.

Creator is also where 4K export and the full AI toolset arrive.

Where it is the wrong tool#

Descript is built for spoken-word video. If your content is motion graphics, product animation, or anything where the edit is driven by visuals rather than speech, the transcript-first approach gives you nothing and a conventional editor like CapCut or DaVinci Resolve will serve better.

Who Descript is for

Buy it if

  • Your video is people talking: interviews, podcasts, webinars, explainer content to camera
  • You find timeline video editing slow and would rather work in a document
  • Removing filler words and cleaning up audio is a meaningful part of your editing time

Skip it if

  • Your video is motion graphics, heavy effects, or tightly designed cuts, where a conventional editor is better suited
  • Your volume is high and unpredictable, where two separate usage meters make budgeting awkward

Frequently asked questions

How much does Descript cost?
Descript has a free plan with 60 minutes of media a month. Paid tiers run roughly $16 a month for Hobbyist, $24 for Creator, and $50 for Business, billed annually. Descript states annual billing saves up to 35 percent against monthly.
Is the Descript free plan usable?
For evaluation, yes. For publishing, no. The free plan exports at 720p with a watermark, so it is enough to test whether transcript-based editing suits your workflow but not to produce finished work.
What are AI credits in Descript?
AI credits are consumed by features like voice cloning, studio sound, and AI video generation. They are metered separately from media hours, so it is possible to run out of credits while still having recording time left, or the reverse.
What does editing by transcript actually mean?
Descript transcribes your video, then deleting a word from the transcript removes that moment from the video. Cutting a rambling answer becomes selecting a sentence and pressing delete, rather than finding the cut points on a timeline.
