Midjourney review: what $10 a month actually buys in GPU time
Midjourney sells GPU hours, not images. The $10 Basic plan gives 3.3 fast hours a month. Here is what that means in practice and which tier a small business actually needs.
Verdict
Midjourney produces the best image quality in this category, but sells GPU time rather than images. Basic at $10 gives 3.3 fast hours a month. Standard at $30 adds unlimited slow generation.

Pros and cons
What works
- Image quality remains the benchmark other generators are measured against, particularly for stylised and illustrative work
- Standard at $30 includes unlimited Relax-mode generation, so heavy users are not capped, only slowed
- Annual billing takes 20 percent off every tier, bringing Basic to $8 and Standard to $24 a month
- Four clear tiers mean a business can start small and scale without renegotiating anything
What does not
- There is no free tier and no trial; Midjourney removed its free trial in 2023, so evaluating it costs $10 minimum
- Billing by GPU hours rather than images makes it genuinely hard to predict how many images a plan yields
- Keeping generations private requires the $60 Pro plan; on Basic and Standard your images are visible in the public gallery
- 3.3 fast hours on Basic runs out quickly for anyone iterating on prompts rather than generating one-shot images
The pricing model is the thing to understand first#
Midjourney does not sell images. It sells GPU processing time, and the number of images that time yields depends entirely on what you generate and how much you iterate.
3.3 hours
Fast GPU time on the $10 Basic plan
Not an image count. How many images that produces depends on complexity and how many times you refine a prompt before getting something usable.
This makes budgeting harder than with a tool that says "500 images a month." A designer who nails a prompt on the second attempt gets far more from 3.3 hours than one who iterates fifteen times.
Why Standard is the tier most small businesses actually need#
The jump from Basic to Standard triples the price, but it changes the model rather than just raising a limit.
| Plan | Monthly | Fast hours | Unlimited Relax | Private generation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | $10 | 3.3 | No | No |
| Standard | $30 | 15 | Yes | No |
| Pro | $60 | 30 | Yes | Yes |
| Mega | $120 | 60 | Yes | Yes |
The privacy issue nobody mentions until it matters#
On Basic and Standard, your generations appear in Midjourney's public gallery. Anyone can browse them.
For a business generating its own marketing images, that is usually irrelevant. For an agency producing work for a client under confidentiality, or a business developing unreleased product visuals, it is disqualifying, and the fix costs $60 a month for Pro with Stealth Mode.
Where Canva beats it#
For routine marketing graphics, social posts, and presentations, Canva's free Magic Studio tools cover the need at $0. Midjourney earns its price when image quality itself is the differentiator, and generic-looking output would actively damage the brand.

Who Midjourney is for
Buy it if
- You need distinctive, high-quality images and generic stock photography is visibly hurting your brand
- You can work in Relax mode, where generation is slower but unlimited on Standard and above
- Image output is a regular part of your marketing rather than an occasional need
Skip it if
- You need to try before paying; there is no free tier, so evaluation costs $10 minimum
- Your image needs are occasional and simple, where Canva's free Magic Studio tools cover the same ground at no cost
- Client confidentiality matters and you cannot justify the $60 Pro tier for Stealth Mode
Frequently asked questions
- How much does Midjourney cost?
- Midjourney has four plans: Basic at $10 a month, Standard at $30, Pro at $60, and Mega at $120. Annual billing reduces each by 20 percent, to $8, $24, $48, and $96 a month respectively.
- Is there a free version of Midjourney?
- No. Midjourney removed its free trial in March 2023 and has not reintroduced one. The cheapest way to evaluate it is one month of the $10 Basic plan.
- What are fast GPU hours?
- Midjourney bills by processing time rather than image count. Each plan includes a monthly allotment of fast GPU hours: 3.3 on Basic, 15 on Standard, 30 on Pro, and 60 on Mega. Once exhausted, Standard and above can keep generating in Relax mode, which is unlimited but slower.
- Are my Midjourney images private?
- Not on Basic or Standard. Generations appear in the public gallery. Private generation requires Stealth Mode, which starts on the $60 Pro plan. This matters for anyone producing client work under confidentiality.
