How much does AI actually cost in 2026: every major plan, checked and dated

Seven providers, from free to $300 a month. The whole market has converged on $20, $100 and $200, with two exceptions. Every figure checked in September 2026, and we say where sources disagree.

Pricing reference

The market has converged on three rungs: about $20, then $100, then $200. Grok breaks it at $300 and DeepSeek breaks it by selling no subscription at all. Free tiers are genuinely usable.

The market has converged on three numbers#

$20 / $100 / $200

The standard ladder in 2026

Four providers now use exactly these three rungs.

This is the single most useful thing to understand about AI pricing this year.

StandardMiddleTop
ChatGPT$20$100$200
Claude$20$100$200
Gemini$19.99$100$200
Perplexity$20—$200

Anthropic set the $100 and $200 rungs first with Max 5x and Max 20x. OpenAI matched with the Pro tiers. Google matched at I/O 2026 and adopted the same 5x and 20x multiplier language.

What that means for you: price is no longer how you choose. When four companies charge identical amounts, the decision moves entirely to capability, ecosystem and what else is bundled.

The two that break the pattern#

Grok goes higher. SuperGrok is $30 for the standard tier — 50 percent above everyone else — and Heavy is $300, the most expensive consumer AI subscription on the market. Nobody else goes past $200.

DeepSeek does not play. There is no subscription at any price. Web chat is free with no paid tier above it, and the API is per token. It is the only major provider with nothing to cancel.

What each standard plan includes for its ~$20#

This is where the identical prices stop being identical.

PriceWhat else is in the box
Gemini AI Pro$19.992TB storage, NotebookLM Plus, 20 Deep Research a day
Copilot via Business Standard$23.50Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, ~1TB
ChatGPT Plus$20The assistant
Claude Pro$20The assistant. $17 billed annually
Perplexity Pro$20200 Pro searches a week, 20 Deep Research a month. $17 annually

Google and Microsoft are selling bundles. OpenAI and Anthropic are selling the assistant alone. Perplexity is selling a narrower tool with published caps.

The cheapest ways to pay#

RouteCostCatch
DeepSeek web chat$0No paid tier exists, so no upgrade path
X Premium$8Bundles the social product you may not want
ChatGPT Go$8No top reasoning model
Midjourney Basic$10Images only, and no free trial first
Copilot, consumer~$3 incrementOnly if you already pay for Microsoft 365

That last row is the most overlooked thing in this market. Microsoft moved Copilot features into the base Microsoft 365 Personal and Family plans and raised those plans by roughly $3 a month. If you already pay for Office as an individual, you have AI access for three dollars and no separate subscription.

API pricing is a completely different scale#

Subscriptions cluster within a few dollars of each other. Token pricing does not.

Per million tokensInputOutput
GPT-6 Astra$10.00$50.00
Grok 4.6$2.00$6.00
Grok 4.3$1.25$2.50
DeepSeek V4-Pro, off-peak$0.66$1.98
DeepSeek V4-Flash, off-peak$0.22$0.66

45x and 75x

How much cheaper DeepSeek V4-Flash is than GPT-6 Astra

Off-peak input and output, respectively.

These are not equivalent models and we are not claiming they are. GPT-6 Astra has a 1,050,000-token context window and frontier reasoning that the cheaper models do not match.

But a 45-fold gap is large enough that "we default to the best model" deserves to be a decision rather than a habit. For classification, extraction and summarisation, the cheap models are frequently good enough. For hard reasoning they frequently are not. The only way to know is to run your own workload against both.

Three figures we could not settle#

Our methodology is to report disagreement rather than resolve it by picking a favourite. Three prices on this page are genuinely unclear:

WhatThe problem
Google AI PlusReported at both $4.99 and $7.99. Google's own I/O 2026 announcement does not state it
Grok SuperGrok PlusReported at around $100, less consistently documented than the tiers either side of it
DeepSeek cached inputReported at both $0.007 and $0.028 per million tokens, apparently for different model builds

In all three cases: confirm on the provider's own page before you commit money.

One price has a deadline#

How to actually decide#

Ignore the model benchmarks for a moment and answer three questions in order.

1. Where do your files live?

Buy
Microsoft 365Copilot — it can read your documents and mail
Google WorkspaceGemini — same reason
NeitherMove to question two

Neither model advantage is worth migrating an entire business between office suites.

2. What is your budget?

Buy

Under $20ChatGPT Go $8 or X Premium $8
About $20Any of ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity
$100+Only if you are hitting limits weekly, not once

3. What is the work?

Buy
Research you need to citePerplexity — sources attached to every answer

Breadth across many tasksChatGPT
ImagesMidjourney, and note there is no free trial
Building on an API, cost-sensitiveDeepSeek, off-peak

The mistake almost everyone makes#

Paying for two.

At $20 a month each, running ChatGPT and Claude, or Gemini and Perplexity, costs $480 a year for heavily overlapping tools. Pick the one that matches your main job and use a competitor's free tier when you want a second opinion.

The free tiers in 2026 are genuinely good. That is the quiet story in all of this: for a large share of small businesses, the correct answer is still $0, and the honest test is to run a fortnight on free and count how often you actually hit a wall.

The short version

What works

  • Because four providers now charge the same $20, $100 and $200, price no longer decides which one you pick
  • Every provider except Midjourney has a free tier that is usable rather than a trial
  • DeepSeek and Grok show that the $20 standard is a convention, not a cost floor

What does not

  • Several tiers share names across providers while meaning different things, which makes comparison harder than it should be
  • Google publishes two separate plans both called AI Ultra, and most pricing pages report only one of them
  • Advertised prices for Copilot exclude the Microsoft 365 base plan you must buy underneath it

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest AI subscription in 2026?
X Premium at $8 a month and ChatGPT Go at $8 a month are the cheapest paid plans. Below that, DeepSeek's web chat is free with no paid tier at all, and every provider except Midjourney offers a usable free tier.
Why do ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini all cost about $20?
Convergence rather than coincidence. All three charge roughly $20 for the standard individual plan, roughly $100 for a middle tier and $200 for the top. Anthropic set the $100 and $200 rungs with Max, and OpenAI and Google both matched. Google now even uses Anthropic's 5x and 20x multiplier language.
How much does the AI API cost compared to a subscription?
They are not comparable products, but the spread is enormous. GPT-6 Astra is $10 per million input tokens and $50 output. DeepSeek V4-Flash off-peak is $0.22 and $0.66, roughly 45 times cheaper on input and 75 times on output. Grok 4.3 sits between them at $1.25 and $2.50.
Which AI subscription should a small business buy?
Start from where your files already are. If you run Microsoft 365, Copilot can read your documents and mail. If you run Google Workspace, Gemini can. If neither applies, all the $20 plans are close enough that you should test two free tiers on real work for a week rather than reading another comparison.

Tashawar handles verification and editing. Every figure in a review is checked a second time before it goes out, and anything that cannot be traced to a vendor page or a documented source is either qualified or cut. Where pricing is genuinely unclear, as it is with Canva team plans or Close CRM tiers, the article says so and tells the reader to confirm directly instead of quoting a number with false confidence.

  • Second check on every published figure
  • Removes claims the sources do not support
  • Flags pricing that changes without notice
