Copy.ai review: the $29 plan is generous, the jump past it is not

Verdict

Editor's note

Copy.ai's $29 Chat plan covers five seats with unlimited words, which is generous for a small team. The problem is what comes after: the next tier jumps to $1,000 a month with no real middle ground.

Pros and cons

What works

  • The Chat plan includes 5 seats for $29 a month, which is unusually generous — most competitors charge per seat from the first user
  • Access to multiple underlying models (OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini) is included rather than locked to one vendor
  • Unlimited words in chat and unlimited chat projects on the entry plan, with no word-count anxiety

What does not

  • No free plan is currently published on Copy.ai's pricing page, unlike several direct competitors
  • The step up from the $29 Chat plan is to Growth at $1,000 a month for 75 seats — there is no tier in between for a team of 10 or 20 people
  • Workflow automation (as opposed to chat) is metered by credits starting at the Growth tier, which is where the real cost jump happens

What Copy.ai is#

Copy.ai is a chat-first AI writing tool: rather than leading with a document editor like Jasper's Canvas, it leads with a conversational interface, and lets a team pick which underlying model answers — OpenAI, Anthropic, or Gemini — rather than locking everyone into one vendor's model.

$29/mo

Chat plan, for 5 seats

Most writing tools price per seat starting from the first user. Copy.ai's entry tier includes five people for one flat price, which changes the math for a small team.

The seat math actually works in a small team's favour#

For a team of two to five people, $29 a month covering every seat is a genuinely different value proposition than a per-seat competitor. A five-person team on a $29-per-seat tool elsewhere would be paying roughly $145 a month for the same headcount; Copy.ai's Chat plan covers all five for a fifth of that.

Where it falls apart: the gap after five seats#

This is worth knowing before evaluating Copy.ai against Jasper or a per-seat competitor: the sticker price comparison only favours Copy.ai up to five people. Past that, the comparison flips hard in the other direction.

Team sizeCopy.aiA typical $29/seat competitor
3 people$29/mo (Chat)$87/mo
5 people$29/mo (Chat)$145/mo
6 people$1,000/mo (Growth)$174/mo
10 people$1,000/mo (Growth)$290/mo

What Growth actually adds, beyond seats#

Growth is not just more seats bolted onto Chat. It introduces workflow credits — 20,000 a month — which power Copy.ai's automated, repeatable content workflows rather than one-off chat drafting. For a business that has outgrown ad hoc prompting and wants a defined, repeatable content pipeline, that is a real capability upgrade, not just a seat unlock. It is a capability a five-person team on Chat does not get access to at all.

Who should look elsewhere#

A business anywhere between six and, realistically, thirty or forty people is the awkward zone: too big for Chat's five seats, and Growth's 75-seat, $1,000-a-month tier is more capacity and cost than the team needs. That business should get quotes from per-seat competitors before assuming Copy.ai's flat pricing is the better deal, because past five seats it usually is not.

Who Copy.ai is for

Buy it if

  • You have a small team of two to five people and mostly need conversational drafting rather than a built workflow engine
  • You want the flexibility of switching between AI models rather than being locked to one provider

Skip it if

  • You have six to fifteen people who all need seats — you will be paying for far more capacity than you use at $1,000 a month, or squeezing a team beyond five seats onto Chat
  • You want to build repeatable, automated content workflows rather than chat-driven drafting; that lives behind the Growth plan's credit system
