Why people are looking#

Plus +41%, Advanced +70%

The QuickBooks increase on renewals from 1 August 2026

Simple Start was the only tier left out.

That is the whole reason this page exists. A renewal notice arrived, the number had moved a long way, and the obvious question followed.

Before you move, price your actual renewal rather than the headline. If you are on Simple Start, nothing changed and switching may cost you more in migration effort than it saves.

1. Wave, if your books are simple#

The only genuinely free option, and it is not a stripped demo.

Unlimited invoices, unlimited customers, real double-entry bookkeeping, and proper reports. Free, permanently, no card required.

The catch is not a paywall, it is scope. Wave has no inventory tracking and no multi-currency, and neither is coming. If you sell physical products or bill overseas clients in their currency, stop here.

The real cost is payment processing at 2.9 percent plus $0.60 per card transaction. On $10,000 of card-paid invoices that is about $350 a month, which is more than any subscription on this page. Setup and that arithmetic are in how to use Wave.

2. Xero, if you want the same thing cheaper on a team#

The closest like-for-like replacement. Same job, same depth, different pricing model.

The catch: the entry Early plan caps you at 20 invoices a month. Count last month before choosing it. Full comparison in Wave vs Xero.

3. Zoho Books, if you are under $50K#

The free tier is real: one user, 1,000 invoices a year, core accounting, for businesses under $50,000 annual revenue.

That is an unusual way to draw the line, and an honest one. You are not blocked by a feature cap you hit at random. You upgrade when the business grows enough to afford it.

Paid Standard is around $15 a month billed annually, which undercuts Xero. It fits best if you already use other Zoho tools, because the integration is the reason to be in that ecosystem at all.

4. FreshBooks, if you bill clients rather than keep books#

Different emphasis. FreshBooks is built around client invoicing and time tracking rather than general ledger work.

The one thing worth checking before any of these: ask your accountant which they work in. Migration is real effort, and doing it into a tool your accountant cannot open is the expensive version of saving money.

If you decide to leave, the steps and the one-year read-only window are in how to cancel QuickBooks.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a genuinely free alternative to QuickBooks?
Wave, and it is the only mainstream one. Unlimited invoices, unlimited customers, and full double-entry bookkeeping at zero with no expiry. Zoho Books is also free but only under $50,000 annual revenue. Everything else labelled free is a trial.
What is the closest alternative to QuickBooks Online?
Xero. It does the same job with the same depth, and includes unlimited users on every plan where QuickBooks charges per seat. The main gaps are US accountant familiarity and the 20-invoice cap on the cheapest tier.
Will my accountant accept books kept outside QuickBooks?
Yes, provided the tool does double-entry bookkeeping, which all four here do. What varies is convenience. More US accountants work in QuickBooks daily, so handing over Xero or Wave books may mean exporting rather than granting direct access. Ask yours before you switch.
How much did QuickBooks actually go up?
On renewals from 1 August 2026, Plus rose about 41 percent and Advanced about 70 percent. Simple Start was the only tier left out. That increase is why this list exists, and it is worth pricing your own renewal rather than the headline figures.

Wave costs nothing and Xero starts at $25 a month. The decision is not price, it is scope: Wave has no inventory and no multi-currency, and Xero caps its cheapest plan at 20 invoices.

What is QBO? The short answer, and what it costs in 2026

QBO just means QuickBooks Online. It is not a separate product or a cheaper edition. What the abbreviation covers, how it differs from QuickBooks Desktop, and what each plan costs now.
