Pros and cons

What works

  • Genuinely built for HR rather than payroll with HR bolted on, which shows in onboarding and records
  • The employee self-service side is strong, which removes a real amount of admin work
  • Per-employee pricing above 25 staff is reasonable against the market
  • Reporting on headcount, turnover, and time off is better than in general payroll tools

What does not

  • Under 25 employees a flat rate starting near $250 a month applies, which is punitive at ten staff
  • Pricing is quote-based, so published figures are indicative rather than what you will pay
  • Payroll is a separate consideration, so many companies end up paying for this and Gusto
  • Every deal is negotiated, meaning two similar companies can pay meaningfully different rates

The pricing floor is the whole story for small companies#

About $250 a month

The flat rate below 25 employees

At ten staff that is roughly $25 a head for the entry product.

Above 25 employees, BambooHR prices per head, and the rates are competitive:

PlanPer employee / month
CoreAbout $10
ProAbout $17
EliteAbout $25

Below 25 employees, that structure does not apply. You pay a flat rate starting around $250 a month.

That is not dishonest pricing. Serving a small account costs roughly the same as a medium one, so vendors set a floor. But it means BambooHR is genuinely poor value at exactly the size that most searches for HR software come from.

Everything is quoted#

There is no self-serve checkout. Every deal is negotiated, and actual rates depend on company size, contract length, and how you negotiate.

Two similar companies can pay meaningfully different amounts. That means published figures, including these, are a starting point rather than a price.

Practically: get quotes from two vendors before accepting either, because the number is negotiable in a way that per-seat SaaS usually is not.

What it is genuinely good at#

HR records. One place where employment history, documents, and changes live, with a proper audit trail.

Onboarding. Structured, repeatable, and it removes a real amount of manual chasing.

Employee self-service. People find their own payslips, book their own time off, and update their own details. That is the feature that actually reduces HR hours.

Reporting. Headcount, turnover, and time-off analysis that general payroll tools do not produce well.

Where it stops#

Payroll. It exists in some markets, but the platform is not built around payroll processing. Many companies end up running BambooHR for HR and something else for payroll, which is two bills.

That combination is common and it is expensive. Before committing, work out whether you need both products or whether one of them covers enough.

Against Gusto#

They are not the same category, and the comparison gets made constantly anyway.

Gusto is payroll with HR attached. Base fee plus per employee, published pricing, and its weakness is also at small headcount because of that base fee.

BambooHR is HR with payroll available. Quoted pricing, and its weakness at small headcount is the flat-rate floor.

The full comparison is in Gusto vs BambooHR, and the Gusto pricing shape is in our Gusto review.

The verdict#

Worth it if you have well past 25 employees and HR admin is genuinely consuming hours. At that size the per-employee rate is fair and the product is good at its job.

Not worth it if you have ten or fifteen staff. The flat rate makes it about $25 a head for entry capability, and at that size a shared drive, a calendar, and a payroll tool usually cost less than the software meant to replace them.

Who BambooHR is for

Buy it if

  • You have well over 25 employees, where per-employee pricing applies and is competitive
  • HR admin, onboarding, and time off tracking are consuming real hours
  • You want employee self-service so people stop asking HR for their own documents

Skip it if

  • You have ten or fifteen staff, where the flat-rate floor makes it about $25 a head
  • Payroll is your actual problem, since that is a different product
  • You need published pricing to budget, because everything here is quoted

Frequently asked questions

How much does BambooHR cost?
Core is quoted around $10 per employee a month, Pro around $17, and Elite around $25. Below 25 employees BambooHR charges a flat monthly rate starting near $250 instead. All pricing is quote-based, so published figures are indicative.
Why is BambooHR expensive for a small company?
Because under 25 employees it charges a flat rate rather than per head. A ten-person company paying $250 a month is paying about $25 an employee, which is the Elite rate for the Core product. The floor exists to make small deals worth serving.
Does BambooHR do payroll?
It offers payroll in some markets, but the platform is built around HR records, onboarding, time off, and performance rather than payroll processing. Many companies run BambooHR alongside a payroll product, which means paying for both.
Is BambooHR or Gusto better?
They solve different problems. Gusto is payroll with HR features attached. BambooHR is HR with payroll available. If your pain is running payroll correctly, Gusto. If it is onboarding, records, time off, and performance, BambooHR.

Nizam started Tested AI after noticing how often published software prices are simply wrong. Most articles copy a vendor's pricing page once and never look again. He checks every figure against the vendor's own page, cross-references independent trackers, and states plainly when they disagree rather than picking whichever number reads best. He does not claim to have run these tools in production, and the reviews say so at the top of every page.

  • Checks every price against the vendor page
  • Reports source conflicts instead of hiding them
  • No vendor has paid for placement
