What the winner gets right, and where it falls short
What works
- Both charge exactly $20 for their main individual plan, so price is not the deciding factor at that rung
- ChatGPT Go at $8 is a genuine middle step between free and $20 that Claude has no answer to
- Claude Team seats cost the same as individual Pro billed annually, which makes small team adoption unusually cheap
What does not
- Neither lets a solo operator buy the team product, so the data protections that come with team plans need two seats
- The $100 and $200 tiers on both are usage multipliers, not better models, which is easy to misread as capability
- Comparing free tiers is hard because the limits are described in completely different units
The short version#
Both $20
ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro
At the tier most people buy, price tells you nothing.
If you were hoping one of these would be cheaper, they are not. The plan almost everyone buys costs the same on both sides.
So the decision has to be made somewhere else, and there are three places it can be made.
One: is there a plan below $20?#
| Cheapest paid | |
|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Go, $8 |
| Claude | Pro, $20 |
ChatGPT Go exists for people who found $20 too much. Claude has nothing there — you go from free straight to $20.
If your budget is the binding constraint, this is the whole comparison. ChatGPT wins at $8 by default, because Claude does not compete at that price.
Two: how many of you are there?#
This is where it reverses.
| Team pricing | Minimum | |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT Business | $20/user annually, $25 monthly | 2 seats |
| Claude Team | $20/seat annually, $25 monthly | Per seat |
The headline numbers are the same. The structure is not.
Claude prices a Team seat at the same $20 as an individual Pro subscription billed annually. So if two people at your business are each already paying $20 for Pro, moving to Team costs nothing and adds shared workspaces, central billing and admin controls.
Three: what does your work look like?#
Price and structure being close, this is what actually decides it.
Claude tends to suit long documents, careful editing, and work where you want the model to stay consistent across a long conversation.
ChatGPT tends to suit breadth — a bit of writing, a bit of analysis, a bit of code, image generation, and the wider ecosystem of custom GPTs and agent features.
We are not going to pretend to have benchmarked these against each other on your work. The honest advice is to run the same real task on both free tiers for a week and notice which one you keep going back to. That is a better signal than any comparison table, including this one.
The free tiers are not comparable on paper#
| Free tier | |
|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Unlimited everyday text chat |
| Claude | ~30 to 100 messages a day, resetting every 4 to 8 hours |
The message count is not the interesting part. The reset cycle is.
A daily allowance can be rationed across a working day. Claude's four-to-eight-hour window means a long session hits the limit partway through a task and you wait for it to refill. For occasional questions this never comes up. For an afternoon of real work, it is the thing you will notice.
On free tiers alone, ChatGPT is the more usable of the two.
The tiers above $20 are the same ladder#
| $100 | $200 | |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Pro Codex | Pro Max |
| Claude | Max 5x | Max 20x |
Both are usage multipliers rather than better models. Anthropic states its multipliers explicitly, which is more honest, but the substance is identical: you are buying headroom.
Which to actually pick#
| Your situation | Pick |
|---|---|
| Budget under $20 | ChatGPT Go, $8. Claude has no answer |
| One person, $20 to spend | Either. Test both free tiers for a week |
| Two or more people | Claude Team, marginally, on structure |
| Long documents and careful writing | Claude |
| Breadth across many kinds of work | ChatGPT |
| Data must stay out of training | Team or Business on either — both need two seats in practice |
The most expensive mistake here is paying for both. At $40 a month for heavily overlapping tools, pick one and use the other's free tier when you want a second opinion.

Frequently asked questions
- Is ChatGPT or Claude cheaper?
- At the main plan they are identical: ChatGPT Plus is $20 and Claude Pro is $20. Below that, ChatGPT is cheaper because Go exists at $8 and Claude has nothing between free and $20. Claude is cheaper if you commit annually, at $17 a month, because Plus is not discounted for annual billing.
- Which is better for a small team?
- Claude, on price structure. A Claude Team seat is $20 billed annually, the same as one individual Pro subscription, so two people already paying for Pro can move to Team for nothing extra. ChatGPT Business is also $20 a user annually but carries a two-seat minimum, which is the same practical outcome for two people and worse for one.
- Can one person get the business data protections?
- Not on either. ChatGPT Business requires a minimum of two seats. Claude Team is per seat, so a single person would be buying a team product alone. A solo operator wanting conversations kept out of training has to buy two seats or rely on the consumer opt-out.
- Which free tier is more useful?
- ChatGPT, for most people. It covers unlimited everyday text chat, where Claude gives roughly 30 to 100 messages a day. The bigger difference is the reset: Claude refills on a four to eight hour cycle, so a long working session hits a wall partway through, which does not happen on ChatGPT free.
